The complete guide
Business insurance looks like a commodity until you have a claim. Two policies with the same name can differ in what they exclude, how they value a loss, and what conditions you must meet. The insurer behind the policy also decides how the claim is handled.
Every insurer also has an appetite: the industries it wants, the ones it writes carefully, and the ones it declines. A contractor, a restaurant and a software firm will each find a different set of insurers keen to quote. That's why comparing several insurers, not just several prices, gets a better result. See why your industry shapes your insurance.
Each insurer has its own page with its products, programs and claims line.

Price matters, but it's the last thing to compare, not the first. These are the questions that decide whether a policy works when you need it:
| Factor | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Appetite for your industry | An insurer that actively writes your class tends to offer better wording, more stable pricing and fewer surprises at renewal |
| Policy wording | Exclusions, sublimits, valuation and conditions. The details that decide a claim are rarely on the first page |
| Specialist programs | Some insurers run programs built for particular trades or professions, with coverage a generic policy lacks |
| Claims service | How the insurer handles claims in your region and your type of loss |
| Stability | Insurers that stay in your class through hard markets, so you aren't re-shopping every year |
| Price | Compared last, once the coverage is genuinely equivalent |
It's rare, but Canada has a safety net. All property and casualty insurers licensed in a province or territory must belong to a guarantee fund. The Property and Casualty Insurance Compensation Corporation (PACICC) is the industry-funded, not-for-profit fund that protects eligible policyholders and claimants if a member insurer becomes insolvent.
Almost all companies that insure Canadian businesses are PACICC members, with some exceptions, including some mutual insurers in Ontario and Quebec. Protection is automatic, with no extra fee. We can tell you how any insurer we recommend is covered.
| Your broker (Insurabiz) | Your insurer | |
|---|---|---|
| Works for | You | Its policyholders and shareholders or members |
| Before you buy | Assesses your risks, markets your business, compares wording and price | Underwrites the risk and sets the terms |
| During the policy | Handles changes, certificates and renewals | Issues the policy and endorsements |
| At claim time | Advises and advocates for you | Adjusts and pays covered claims |
Report a claim to your insurer's claims line, then tell us. Every insurer page lists its claims number, and our claims team supports you through to settlement.
Most brokers, including us, are paid a commission by the insurer. It is built into the premium you're quoted, not added on top, and for commercial lines it is generally in the low-to-mid teens as a share of premium. On complex programs we may agree a fee instead of or alongside commission.
Because commission is a percentage of premium, we think you should know how it works and what we earn on any placement you ask about. The full detail is on how we get paid.
Insurers compete hardest in a soft market, and Canada's commercial market is soft. Marsh's Global Insurance Market Index put Canadian commercial insurance rates down 6% in the third quarter of 2026, with property down 8%. That's a good time to have your business compared across several insurers rather than renewing on autopilot.
